Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point. – C. S. Lewis
It was about 3 1/2 years ago I was leaving my college final as entered the elevator on the sixth floor. I press the button to go to the first floor. As we passed the fifth floor I heard a snap. The elevator cord broke and immediately the emergency brakes went into gear. The elevator dropped about a floor and a half before it fully stopped. I was shocked, scared, basically every type of feeling you could imagine. I had to realize after a long time coming that it was inside me to stay calm. I had dealt with a lot of fear and anxiety over my whole childhood. Realizing in this moment that I could change the course of how I look at things in my life. While in that elevator I realized, I was either going to live or I was going to die, there was no in between. I realized, either way, I did not want to worry or be stressed out. If this was going to be my last moments in life I wanted them to be calm and relaxing. On the other side if I was gonna live anyway there was no reason to stress.
Calm minds bring inner strength and self-confidence. – Dalai Lama
After calling the emergency line and waiting about an hour for help to arrive I was able to keep myself totally at ease and completely calm. I knew in this moment I had made an impact on my life but I had no idea how much until a few years later. Since that day I handle most of my problems in a similar way.
It is the ability to understand and realize we need to change the way we see in order to get through problems in our life.
