Traveling doesn’t always have to be expensive or lavish to be exhilarating and enjoyable. In fact, I managed to push my budgeting skills far beyond what even I thought was possible. I was able to live off of just $18 a day during my stay in Quito, Ecuador.
There are some moments in your life where you feel the need to just pack up and go. For me, Ecuador was the destination! Never having been to South America before and barely remembering any of the Spanish I had learned in high school, I knew this was going to be a challenging adventure but one I was willing to face head on.
I had a bit of money saved up but was still determined to save anywhere I could. A few weeks before I left I found an amazing deal on a flight using the app Skyscanner. I was able to book a flight for only $450. Shortly after that, I booked my stay at the Community Adventures Hostel, which was just $10 a night. I chose to eat breakfast and dinner at the hostel which allowed me to only spend $8 a day on food. The hostel was comfortable, met all my needs and was in a great location. The bunk beds were huge and the bathrooms were private – what more could a girl ask for?!
Because I chose to eat breakfast and dinner at the hostel it allowed me to only spend $8 a day on food. Between stay and food I managed to spend only $18 a day.
