When planning my trips I always think about whether I want to do them solo or with a companion. This of course depends on the type of travel experience I want to have and where I am going – I find that both ways of travel can have their ups and downs.
SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER
1. Type of travel experience
2. Travel destination(s)
3. Things you want to do
4. Travel style
Type of Travel Experience:
Do you want an adventurous, meet new people, partying, soul enriching, self-discovering, roughing it type of travel? Would the person you want to travel with have similar desires in mind?
In order to decide whether going with someone is the right decision for you, first you need to figure out what type of experience you would like to have on this trip.
Where is it that the road will take you? Are you going to a dangerous location? Is it very touristy? Will the person you are traveling with be happy with the locations?
Things You Want To Do:
What are some things you would like to do while exploring in this location? Make sure that your travel companion doesn’t mind doing these things with you – or make sure that person is ok with separating for a bit so you both can do what you would like to do.
Do you want to backpack across some foreign land? Do you want to budget travel? Do you want to stay in hostels? Make sure that you both are comfortable with the style of travel you will be doing.
THE BIGGEST PERKS
-You can do what you want to do when you want to do it
-You have more time for self-discovery
-You have a larger appreciation when you get done with the trip…“I can’t believe I did this all on my own!”
-Quietness – peace and serenity
-You avoid loneliness
-You will feel more comfortable to go out to do things that you may not otherwise feel comfortable enough to do alone
-Safety net and support system
-Two brains are always better than one
-Sharing costs and experiences
At the end of the day, I have found that I truly love the experience of traveling alone. I have had some major awakenings and accomplishments throughout my solo adventures.
One piece of advice I can give is: don’t ever think you can’t do it on your own! It took me years to
realize that. I was always searching for someone to travel with. I never imagined that my best traveling companion could be myself. That’s not to say traveling alone is for everyone but no one should dismiss it too quickly.
